Buildings, Deconstruction & Remodels

Buildings - including offices, homes and stores - use 40% of our energy and 70% of our electricity. buildings also emit over one third of US greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than any other sector of the economy. There are numerous third party certification programs such as Energy StarLEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) , Well Building, Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) , National Green Building Standard, Green Guard, Green Globes, Net Zero Homes, Living Building Challenge, Casbee, and guidance documents outlining minimum requirements and enhancements that can be incorporated into building designs to not only reduce natural resources but to design with occupants comfort and health in mind. The certifications costs  vary but are roughly listed from least to most expensive. However, it is important to note, green buildings will have substantially lower operating costs, increase productivity , reduce sick days, and yield higher rent premiums.  Energy Star is a FREE program offered through the DOE and EPA by simply registered for a Portfolio Manager account. Certain certifications focus on energy efficiency (Casbee), while others address health issues (Well Building, Green Guard).
