Education & Engagement

Education and  engagement is critical to the success of any initiative, especially if the initiative requires a change in behavior. Focus on understanding the cost, social and environmental ramifications and long-term return on investments.

Below is a short engagement video that received over 5,000 views

Two successful business engagement programs that can be used as models are ClimateWise (CW) and Green to Gold (GtG). Attached is a presentation about CW and GtG. GtG partners are provided with various weighted action items to address energy efficiency, water conservation, etc. After making a carbon reduction commitment , partners earn badges based on six priority areas (energy, water, waste reduction, transportation, social equity, speciality). Refer to badge lists for select action items. Recognize the partner's projects through case studies.

Energy outreach should center on optimizing energy efficiency and then accelerating the adoption of renewable power throughout the community at various scales. Outreach should include pledges, challenge campaignsfeedback on cumulative impact of challenges and THANK-YOUs. See sample challenges provided here and throughout this website under the various categories.

Provide both residential and commercial conservation seminars either through local events (Bike to Work Days, neighborhood challenges, Mindful Movies) , and/or by hosting sites to view and discuss state, federal, and association led webinars. Use material that covers both technical and financial resources.  Refer to the following resources for basic information on the various sustainability elements such as energy efficiency, green building case studies, GHG toolkits, Carbon Free Guides, renewables, water conservation, local food and more.

Apply Community Based Social Marketing (CBSM) to calibrate messaging and address perceived and identified barriers (see  CBSM).

As folks are educated about the merits of sustainability additional initiatives can be

identified for employees to make an impact within their respective divisions. An effective feedback loop will continue to engage new and existing employees. Onboarding is important.
